However, how are we supposed to go\nthrough millions of tweets on a daily basis? The answer is a bit clich\u00e9\u2014very\ncarefully, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twitter is very generous with the number of search operators that it supports. When you\u2019re searching for something specific, that just doesn\u2019t cut it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, let\u2019s go over Twitter\u2019s many\ndifferent search operators and learn how to narrow our searches down to get the\nexact content we\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basic Search Operators for\nTwitter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Twitter\u2019s most basic search operators are a\nset that you expect out of most search engines. The ability to exclude certain\nterms and search for an exact phrase are things we\u2019ve come to expect, and\nTwitter doesn\u2019t sell us short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201c\u201d (quotation marks)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The quotation marks search operator limits\nresults to tweets that contain an exact phrase. This requires\nboth the username of the Twitter user who owns the list and the list\u2019s URL\nslug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Example:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=list%3Ascobleizer%2Fworld-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">list:scobleizer\/world-news<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Filter-Based Search Operators for\nTwitter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of Twitter\u2019s most powerful and specific\nfiltering options revolve around the \u201cfilter\u201d operator. With this operator, we\ncan narrow down tweets by what type of media they contain, when they were\ntweeted, and which sites they link to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">filter:safe<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cfilter:safe\u201d search operator limits\nresults to tweets that are marked as safe and not potentially sensitive. This operator can\u2019t be used by itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Example:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=politics%20filter%3Aretweets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">politics filter:retweets<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">filter:native_video<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cfilter:native_video\u201d search operator\nlimits results to tweets that contain video from Amplify, Periscope, or Vine.\nThis operator can\u2019t be used by itself, and you can also filter specifically by\nvideo platforms with \u201cfilter:periscope\u201d and \u201cfilter:vine\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Example:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=meme%20filter%3Anative_video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">meme filter:native_video<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">filter:images<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cfilter:images\u201d search operator limits\nresults to tweets that contain images. This operator can\u2019t be used by itself,\nand you can only search for natively-hosted images with \u201cfilter:twimg\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Example:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=dunk%20filter%3Aimages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">dunk filter:images<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">filter:links<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cfilter:links\u201d search operator limits\nresults to tweets that contain links. This operator can\u2019t be used by itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Example:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=hurricane%20since%3A2017-09-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">hurricane since:2017-09-20<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">until<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cuntil\u201d search operator limits results to\ntweets that have been tweeted after the date thereafter (year-month-day\nformat). This operator can\u2019t be used by itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Example:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=earthquake%20until%3A2018-02-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">earthquake until:2018-02-11<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A great trick you can use is combining the\nhyphen search operator with any of the \u201cfilter\u201d operators. This will allow you\nto do things like search for tweets that don\u2019t contain images or contain\npotentially sensitive material. Stringing together more than one operator can\nreally laser-focus your search to the exact results that you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get creative when you\u2019re searching through\nTwitter!
