Every major web browser, including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari, features a built-in password manager that lets you save and auto-fill passwords. Create or type in a set of login credentials, and your browser will ask you if you want it to remember the info.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Occasionally, however, your browser doesn\u2019t save or remember passwords. For example, incorrectly configured settings, password exceptions, conflicting browser extensions, etc., can cause this problem.<\/p>\n\n\n

Work your way through the fixes below to get your browser to start saving and remembering passwords again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enable Password Saving for Your Browser<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your browser fails to save passwords for every site you sign into, you may need to activate the option that remembers your login info. You can do that by going through your password preferences or autofill settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google Chrome<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

1. Open the Chrome<\/strong> menu (select icon with three dots at the top right of the window) and select Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Select Autofill<\/strong> on the sidebar. Then, pick the option labeled Passwords <\/strong>to the left side of the Settings screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Turn on the switch next to Offer to save passwords<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Remove Site From Never Saved List<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Is the issue limited to a specific site or set of sites? Chances are you previously chose not to remember passwords for those sites. If so, your browser won’t ask you to save the login info again unless you remove them from its password exceptions list. To do so, follow these instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google Chrome<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

1. Open the Chrome<\/strong> menu and select Settings<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Select Autofill<\/strong> > Passwords<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Scroll down until you get to the Never Saved<\/strong> section. Then, remove any sites you don’t want to keep within the list by selecting the X<\/strong> icon next to each entry.<\/p>\n\n\n

1. Open the Firefox<\/strong> menu and select Settings<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Scroll down to the Logins and Passwords<\/strong> section and select Exceptions<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Pick a site and choose the Remove Website <\/strong>button to delete it. Or, select Remove All<\/strong> Websites<\/strong> to delete all entries within the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Select Save changes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

3. Scroll down to the Never Saved<\/strong> section and delete the entries you want from the list underneath.<\/p>\n\n\n

1. Select Safari<\/strong> > Preferences<\/strong> on the menu bar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Switch to the Passwords<\/strong> tab and enter your user account password (or use Touch ID) to unlock your list of saved passwords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Safari’s password manager lumps both saved passwords and exempted sites together, but you can identify entries that belong to the latter group by looking out for the never saved<\/strong> label. After selecting an entry, select the Remove <\/strong>button.<\/p>\n\n\n

Clear Your Browsing Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your browser continues to fail to ask you to save passwords (or if nothing happens when you attempt to remember them), try clearing your browser’s cookies and cache<\/a>. That usually helps fix issues caused by outdated browsing data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google Chrome<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

1. Open the Chrome<\/strong> menu and select Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Select Privacy and security<\/strong> on the sidebar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Select the option labeled Clear browsing data<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Set Time Range<\/strong> to All Time<\/strong> and check the boxes next to Cookies and site data<\/strong> and Cached images and files<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Select Clear data<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Disable Your Browser Extensions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Extensions can create conflicts, so check if disabling them restores your browser’s ability to remember passwords. You can then isolate the problematic extension by reactivating them one by one. Here’s how to access your browser’s extensions manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google Chrome<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Select the Extensions<\/strong> icon to the top-left of the screen and select Manage Extensions. Or, open the Chrome<\/strong> menu, point to More Tools<\/strong>, and select Extensions<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mozilla Firefox<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Open the Firefox<\/strong> menu and select Add-ons and Themes<\/strong>. Then, select Extensions<\/strong> on the sidebar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Microsoft Edge<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Select the Extensions<\/strong> icon to the top-left of the screen and select Manage Extensions<\/strong>. Or, open the Edge<\/strong> menu and choose Extensions<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple Safari<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Select Safari<\/strong> > Preferences<\/strong> on the menu bar and switch to the Extensions<\/strong> tab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try Saving Passwords Manually<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your browser continues to have trouble remembering passwords for a specific site or set of sites, you can attempt to save the login info manually. Unfortunately, you can only do that on Firefox and Safari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mozilla Firefox<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

1. Open the Firefox<\/strong> menu and select Passwords<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Select the Create New Login<\/strong> button to the lower-left corner of the window. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Fill in the fields and select Save<\/strong>. Repeat for any other login credentials you want your browser to remember.<\/p>\n\n\n

Enable Passwords Syncing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your passwords don’t appear to sync between devices, it’s a good idea to check your browser’s sync settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Open the Chrome<\/strong> menu and select Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Select Sync and Google services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If none of the fixes above worked, try resetting your browser to factory defaults. You won’t lose any saved bookmarks or passwords, but it’s best to sync your data to your Google<\/a>, Firefox, or Microsoft accounts<\/a> before going ahead.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note:<\/strong> Safari does not offer a reset option, but you can choose to clear its cookies, cache, and other browsing data instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
