Include and Customize a Table of Contents\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want something within the content that your readers can use to navigate your document, you can insert a table of contents in Google Docs. This feature was basic, but Google has enhanced it over time to make it customizable and attractive.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Insert a Table of Contents\n<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To create a table of contents, structure your document section with headings. Enter text for a heading, select it, and then pick a heading level from the <span style=\"font-weight:bold\">Styles<\/span> drop-down box in the toolbar. Work Efficiently With Collapsible Headings\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Google added a super helpful feature to Docs in early 2023 that allows you to work with lengthy documents a bit easier. You can collapse and expand the headings. This is great for focusing on sections of the document you\u2019re using while collapsing those you aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of this writing, the collapsible headings only work when you use the Pageless layout. It\u2019s unclear if the feature will eventually carry over to the Pages layout.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To use the Pageless layout in a new or existing document, go to <span style=\"font-weight:bold\">File<\/span> and select <span style=\"font-weight:bold\">Page setup<\/span>.
